ख्रिस्त में प्रिय भाइयो और बहनो,

हम सभी अपने जीवन में ऐसे क्षणों का सामना करते हैं जब सद्गुण और सुरक्षा के बीच संघर्ष उत्पन्न होता है। जब ये दोनों परस्पर टकराते हैं, तो हमारे लिए यह निर्णय लेना कठिन हो जाता है कि किसे चुनें। यदि हम सुरक्षा को प्राथमिकता देते हैं, तो हमें अपने जीवन की ईमानदारी और सत्यनिष्ठा से समझौता करना पड़ सकता है। इसके विपरीत, सद्गुणों का चयन करने के लिए हमें बड़ी कुर्बानियाँ देनी पड़ती हैं।

आज के सुसमाचार में हमें योहन बपतिस्ता के शहादत का वर्णन मिलता है, जिन्होंने सत्य के लिए अपने प्राणों की आहुति दी। इस घटना में दो परस्पर विरोधी चरित्र दिखाई देते हैं – हेरोद और योहन बपतिस्ता। हेरोद ने अनैतिक जीवन जिया और अपने भाई की पत्नी को हथिया लिया। जब योहन बपतिस्ता ने उसे इस पाप के लिए ललकारा, तो हेरोद जानता था कि वह गलत था, लेकिन उसने अपने अहंकार को नहीं छोड़ा। जनता के सामने अपमानित होने से बचने और सत्य को छिपाने के लिए, उसने योहन को गिरफ़्तार किया और अंततः हेरोदिया की बेटी के छलपूर्ण अनुरोध पर उनकी हत्या कर दी।

इसके विपरीत, योहन बपतिस्ता ने बिना किसी भय के राजा को उसके दोषों का सामना कराया। उन्होंने अपने प्राणों की चिंता किए बिना सत्य के पक्ष में खड़े रहने का निर्णय लिया। यही कारण था कि जब हेरोद ने येसु द्वारा किए गए अद्भुत कार्यों के बारे में सुना, तो वह भयभीत हो गया और सोचने लगा कि योहन पुनर्जीवित हो गए हैं।

पहले पाठ में, लेवी की पुस्तक हमें विश्राम वर्ष और युबली के नियमों के बारे में बताती है, जो ईश्वर की ओर से लोगों को न्याय और समानता के साथ जीने की आज्ञा थी। यह हमें सिखाता है कि ईश्वर का मार्ग हमें धर्मी और सत्यनिष्ठ जीवन जीने के लिए प्रेरित करता है, जो दूसरों के साथ न्याय और करुणा पर आधारित है।

इन दोनों चरित्रों से हमें यह महत्वपूर्ण सीख मिलती है कि हमें अपने जीवन में सत्य और सद्गुणों के पक्ष में खड़ा रहना चाहिए। यह हमें यह भी सिखाता है कि सद्गुण सदैव जीवित रहते हैं, भले ही भौतिक शरीर नष्ट हो जाए। एक सदाचारी जीवन ही हमें ईश्वर के अनुग्रह के योग्य बनाता है। इस संसार में हमें एक उद्देश्य के लिए भेजा गया है – एक धर्मी जीवन जीने के लिए। यह केवल सदाचारी जीवन अपनाने के द्वारा ही संभव है।

आज के पाठ हमें तीन महत्वपूर्ण शिक्षाएँ देते हैं:

1. सद्गुणों को चुनने से हमें सत्य और धर्म के लिए खड़ा होना पड़ता है, भले ही यह कठिन हो।
2. सदाचारी जीवन हमें ईश्वर के अनुग्रह और अनंत जीवन के लिए तैयार करता है।
3. ईश्वर की इच्छा का पालन करने से हमें दूसरों के साथ न्याय और करुणा के साथ जीने की प्रेरणा मिलती है।

आइए, हम प्रभु से प्रार्थना करें कि वे हमें योहन बपतिस्ता की तरह सत्य और सद्गुणों के लिए निडर होकर खड़े रहने की कृपा प्रदान करें, ताकि हम उनके अनुग्रह के योग्य बन सकें। आमेन।

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ Jesus,

All of us face situations of conflict between virtue and safety. At times when these two meet in a conflicting situation, we find it difficult to decide and act. When we choose safety, we may have to compromise our integrity of life. On the contrary, choosing virtue demands a high price of sacrifice.

In today’s gospel, we find the description of the martyrdom of John the Baptist, who stood for what he believed as truth even when his life was threatened. In this incident, we find two contrasting characters—Herod and John the Baptist. Herod lived an immoral life by coveting his brother’s wife. When challenged by John the Baptist, he realized that he was at fault, yet he did not want to give up his ego. In order to protect himself from public shame and to hide behind the truth, he put John in prison and eventually murdered him at the deceitful request of Herodias’s daughter.

On the other hand, John the Baptist stood firm and pointed out the king’s fault without any fear of the dangerous consequences. He chose not to hide behind the truth in order to save himself but to stand by the truth, come what may. That is the reason when Herod hears about the marvelous things done by Jesus, he fears that John had been risen from the dead.

In the first reading, the Book of Leviticus describes the sabbatical year and the Year of Jubilee, which were God’s commands for His people to live with justice and equality. This teaches us that God’s way calls us to a righteous and truthful life, rooted in justice and compassion for others.

From both of these characters, we can draw a great lesson of standing for our virtues in life. It implies that virtues always stay alive even if the physical body perishes. A virtuous life makes us worthy of God’s favor. We are all given a purpose to achieve in the world—that is, to live a righteous life. This can be possible only through virtuous living.

Today’s readings teach us three important lessons:

1. Choosing virtue requires standing for truth and righteousness, even when it is difficult.
2. A virtuous life prepares us for God’s grace and eternal life.
3. Following God’s will inspires us to live with justice and compassion toward others.

Let us pray that God grants us the grace, like John the Baptist, to stand fearlessly for truth and virtue, so that we may be worthy of His favor. Amen.
