“Compassion Above Rules”
Luke 14:1-6
In today’s Gospel, the Lord inspires us through His compassion and mercy to examine our hearts and reflect on our behavior toward others. Many times in our lives, we fail to give priority to God’s love, compassion, and mercy toward people. Instead, we give more importance to our traditions, customs, and man-made rules.
We read in the Holy Bible that the Lord rebukes the Pharisees and the scribes and exposes their hypocrisy, because they compel others to follow the rules but do not follow them themselves.
Jesus wants to teach them that God’s compassion and mercy are far greater than human rules. That is why even on the Sabbath, He heals a man suffering from dropsy and allows him to experience His infinite love and mercy. He also gives him hope and an opportunity to begin a new life.
Jesus wants us, too, to become loving, compassionate, and merciful like Him in our own lives. Today, we need to ask ourselves: Am I compassionate and merciful toward others? Do I help those in need in my life? If not, we must pray to God to grant us the grace to become merciful and loving like Him.
