“True Righteousness of the Heart: Living According to the Spirit”
Galatians 5:18-25 Luke 11:42-46
Dear brothers and sisters, today's readings reveal a profound truth: true righteousness does not come from outward actions but from the transformation of the heart. Jesus calls us to live according to the Spirit rather than according to mere rules or outward appearances.
In his Letter to the Galatians, St. Paul presents two ways of living: life according to the flesh and life according to the Spirit. The works of the flesh include jealousy, anger, selfishness, impurity, and division. But those who walk by the Spirit bear the fruits of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. St. Paul reminds us that those who belong to Christ have crucified the old self and are called to walk in the new life of the Spirit.
In the Gospel, Jesus rebukes the scribes and Pharisees because their religion had become one of outward appearance and hypocrisy. They carefully observed religious laws and practices, yet neglected justice, mercy, and the love of God. Jesus teaches that external observances alone can never make a person truly righteous.
True religion springs from a heart filled with love, compassion, and justice. Our identity as Christians should be recognised not by outward display but by humility, kindness, and genuine love. Today Christ invites us to walk according to the Spirit. May our lives reflect God's love, peace, goodness, patience, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. By living according to the fruits of the Spirit, we truly become the sons and daughters of God.
