“आत्मिक उदारता में समृद्ध बनें”

ख्रीस्त में प्रिय विश्वासियो!

उदारता एक महान सद्गुण है जिसकी अपेक्षा प्रभु हमसे करते हैं। जब हम उदारता की बात करते हैं, तो हम सामान्यतः समय, संसाधनों, धन या ऊर्जा को निःस्वार्थ भाव से दूसरों को देने की इच्छा की ओर इशारा करते हैं। अक्सर परोपकारी कार्यों का मूल्यांकन इस आधार पर किया जाता है कि कोई व्यक्ति दूसरों की भौतिक या आर्थिक आवश्यकताओं की पूर्ति में कितना उदार है। लेकिन आज के सुसमाचार में प्रभु हमें एक नए प्रकार की उदारता — आत्मिक उदारता को अपनाने का निमंत्रण देते हैं।

आज का सुसमाचार इन शब्दों से शुरू होता है: “अपने स्वर्गिक पिता-जैसे दयालु बनो।” (लूकस 6:36) दया आत्मिक उदारता में एक महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका निभाती है। दया क्रोध के पहाड़ को पिघला देती है, अहंकार की दीवारों को तोड़ देती है, पूर्वाग्रहों की परतों को बिखेर देती है, और अंतरतम के घावों को चंगा करती है।

प्रभु येसु हमें आगे यह भी प्रोत्साहित करते हैं कि हम दूसरों का न्याय न करें, दोष न लगाएँ, बल्कि बिना किसी शर्त के क्षमा करें। दूसरों के प्रति निर्णयात्मक दृष्टिकोण रखना मनुष्य की प्रवृत्ति है, लेकिन जब यह निर्णय क्रोध, घमंड, ईर्ष्या, जलन या अहंकार से प्रभावित होता है, तो यह अन्यायपूर्ण निंदा और टूटते संबंधों का कारण बनता है — जिससे हम दूसरों को क्षमा नहीं कर पाते।

प्रभु हमें सिखाते हैं कि जैसा हम बोते हैं, वैसा ही हम काटेंगे। यदि हम दूसरों का न्याय करेंगे, तो हमें भी न्याय का सामना करना होगा। यदि हम दूसरों की निंदा करेंगे, तो हम भी निंदा के पात्र बनेंगे। इसके विपरीत, यदि हम दया करेंगे, तो हमें भी दया मिलेगी; प्रेम देंगे, तो प्रेम प्राप्त होगा; क्षमा करेंगे, तो क्षमा भी मिलेगी।

इस चालीसे के समय में, आइए हम दया दिखाने, क्षमा देने और प्रेम बाँटने में आत्मिक रूप से उदार बनें। हमारे प्रत्येक कार्य आत्मिक उदारता की गवाही दें, ताकि हमारे दयालु ईश्वर की महिमा हो, और हमारा जीवन उसका साक्ष्य बन जाए।

“BE GENEROUS IN SPIRITUAL CHARITY”

My dear friends in Christ!

Generosity is a great virtue that the Lord demands of us. When we speak of generosity, we are immediately reminded of one’s quality of being willing to give freely of one’s time, resources, material goods or energy to others selflessly. Very often charitable acts are judged and valued based on one’s generosity in meeting the material and financial needs of the people.

Today the Lord wants us to cultivate a new virtue of Spiritual Charity. Today’s Gospel begins with Jesus’ saying, “Be merciful, just as your heavenly Father is merciful.” (Lk. 6:36) Mercy plays a vital role in spiritual charity. For mercy melts down the mountain of anger, breaks down the boundaries of ego, scatters the sheltered prejudices, and heals the inner wounds.

Jesus further encourages us to avoid judging and condemning others, and exhorts us to forgive others without any condition. Being judgmental is inherent in us but when our judgement about others is seasoned with prejudice, anger, pride, jealousy, envy or ego then it leads to unjust condemnation of others. This would create a wider breakdown in the relationships and one would not be able to forgive the other.

The Lord teaches that one would reap the harvest of what he or she sows. Judging others results in one’s own judgement and condemning others results in one’s own condemnation. In contrast, mercy produces mercy, love produces love and forgiveness produces forgiveness in return.

In this Lenten season let us learn to be generous in showing mercy, giving forgiveness and showering love. Let each of our actions speak loud of our spiritual charity, and by doing so may our God who is merciful be glorified and our lives be testimonies to it.
