“You Cannot Serve God and Wealth”
In today’s Gospel, Jesus drives out demons from two possessed men, giving them new life and freedom. However, the people of the village react with rejection. Since they lost their swine (and the income that came with them), the whole village came together and asked Jesus to leave their territory.
They were more concerned about their material loss than the great good that had been done — the healing and liberation of two men. They failed to see the blessing and instead focused only on their financial loss.
This incident powerfully illustrates Jesus’ teaching from the Sermon on the Mount: “You cannot serve God and wealth.” The villagers loved their business and material security more than the presence of the Lord. Because of this attachment, they rejected Jesus and asked Him to leave.
This Gospel challenges us to reflect on the need for detachment. Sometimes, accepting Jesus and His healing power requires us to be ready to lose or give up certain things — whether it is comfort, money, status, or old habits. Without this willingness to detach, true healing and transformation cannot take place.
When we consider the value of what we gain in Christ, whatever we give up becomes insignificant in comparison. Detachment is necessary if we want to achieve something higher.

What is my preference? Am I ready to choose Jesus even when it costs me something?
