“The Faith and Humility of the Centurion”
Today’s Gospel presents us with the beautiful example of the Roman centurion. Despite being a man of power and authority, he humbly approaches Jesus and pleads for the healing of his servant.
His humility is striking. A powerful master humbles himself before Jesus for the sake of his servant. This shows the centurion’s deep respect for human dignity and his genuine care for those who served him.
The centurion also shows profound awareness of his own unworthiness. He says, “Lord, I am not worthy to have you under my roof.” Even though he was a man of high status, he recognized the greatness of Jesus and approached Him with sincere humility.
Furthermore, the centurion did not misuse his power and authority. Instead, he used his position to serve and care for others. His love and concern for his servant moved him to seek Jesus’ help.
This Gospel challenges us to examine our own attitude toward others — especially the poor, the marginalized, and those who serve us. Do we treat them with respect, dignity, and genuine care?
