प्रिय भाइयों और बहनों, आज के दोनों पवित्र पाठ हमें सिखाते हैं कि ईश्वर बाहरी रूप नहीं, बल्कि मनुष्य का हृदय देखता है।

1 समुएल के पाठ में, जब समूएल यिशय के पुत्रों में से नए राजा को अभिषेक करने जाता है, तो वह एलीआब को देखकर सोचता है कि यही चुना हुआ होगा क्योंकि वह दिखने में प्रभावशाली था। परन्तु ईश्वर कहता है: “उसके रुप-रंग और लम्बे कद का ध्यान न रखो। मैं उसे नहीं चाहता। प्रभु मनुष्य की तरह विचार नहीं करता। मनुष्य तो बाहरी रूप-रंग देखता है, किन्तु प्रभु हृदय देखता है।” अंततः सबसे छोटा, चरवाहा लड़का दाऊद चुना जाता है क्योंकि उसका हृदय ईश्वर के अनुसार था।

इसी प्रकार सुसमाचार में, येसु और उनके शिष्य विश्राम दिन पर बाल खा रहे हैं। फरीसी इस पर आपत्ति करते हैं, क्योंकि वे नियमों के पालन पर अधिक जोर देते हैं। लेकिन येसु कहते हैं, “विश्राम-दिवस मनुष्य के लिए बना है, न कि मनुष्य विश्राम दिवस के लिए।”

दोनों पाठ हमें यह सिखाते हैं कि ईश्वर को हमारी विनम्रता, सच्चाई और भक्तिप्रिय है ना कि केवल धार्मिक दिखावा या नियमों का कठोर पालन। आज का संसार अक्सर बाहरी छवि, प्रदर्शन और दूसरों की प्रशंसा पर केंद्रित है। लेकिन ईश्वर हमें हमारे अंदरूनी जीवन, हमारे नियत उद्देश्य, और शुद्ध हृदय के आधार पर आंकता है।

Dear Brothers and Sisters, In the first reading Lord sends Samuel to anoint a new king among the sons of Jesse. He sees Eliab and assumes he must be the chosen one because of his impressive stature. But God says, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Ultimately, David the youngest and least expected is chosen, not for his appearance, but for his heart.

Similarly in the gospel, Jesus and His disciples pluck grain on the Sabbath, which upsets the Pharisees. They are concerned about outward observance of the law.

Both readings remind us that God values authenticity, humility, and intention over external forms or appearances. In a world that often values performance, image, and rule-following over sincerity and inner integrity, these passages call us to check our hearts. Are we living for the praise of others or for the approval of God?

Jesus and David, both show us that God often chooses the unexpected and works through the humble. We should strive to live not to impress people, but to please God, who sees what no one else can see—our hearts.
