“Holding On to Faith in Times of Confusion”

Today’s readings speak deeply to young people and seminarians who may feel lost, confused, or burdened by distress and depression. The first reading (James 1:12-18) encourages us, reminding that those who persevere under trial will receive the crown of life God promises to those who love Him. No temptation or hardship comes without God’s knowledge or will—He never leads us to sin but gives us the strength to overcome.

In the Gospel (Mark 8:14-21), Jesus warns His disciples about the “yeast of the Pharisees and Herod,” meaning the harmful influence of doubt and fear. Like the disciples, when overwhelmed by worries or confusion, it’s easy to forget God’s power and presence.

The Old Testament also reminds us, in Psalm 34:18, that God is close to the broken-hearted and saves those crushed in spirit. And in Isaiah 41:10, God comforts us, saying, “Do not fear, for I am with you.” To young people and seminarians discerning their path, remember: even in confusion and sadness, your faith is a light. Keep patient, pray for strength, and trust God who never abandons you. The crown of peace and joy awaits those who hold on firmly to Him.
