आज का सुसमाचार हमें याद दिलाता है कि मसीह ही वह सच्चा प्रकाश है जो संसार के अंधकार में आया। योहन लिखते हैं कि शब्द वह सच्चा ज्योति था, जो प्रत्येक मनुष्य का अन्धकार दूर करती है। वह संसार में आ रहा था (योहन 1:9)। फिर भी, दुःख की बात है कि संसार ने उसे पहचाना नहीं। परंतु खुशखबरी यह है कि जो लोग उसे ग्रहण करते हैं, उन्हें ईश्वर के पुत्र बनने का अधिकार मिलता है।

संत थोमस बेकट, जिन्हें हम आज स्मरण करते हैं, ने इस वरदान को स्वीकार किया और चर्च की सच्चाई की रक्षा अपने जीवन से की। उन्होंने सांसारिक ताकत के सामने झुकने के बजाय मसीह के प्रकाश की गवाही दी। उनकी शहादत हमें याद दिलाती है कि शिष्यत्व की कीमत ऊँची हो सकती है, पर उसका फल अनंत महिमा है।

हमें भी अपने जीवन में पूछना चाहिए: क्या मैं मसीह के प्रकाश को अपने दैनिक संघर्षों में पहचान पाता हूँ? या फिर अभिमान और भय का अंधकार मेरी आँखों को ढक लेता है? आज का पर्व हमें चुनौती देता है कि हम मसीह को प्रतिदिन ग्रहण करें और ईश्वर के पुत्र-पुत्री बनकर जियें। मसीह का प्रकाश कभी मंद नहीं होता, अंधकार उसे परास्त नहीं कर सकता। आइए हम विश्वास और साहस के साथ इसी प्रकाश में चलें।

Today’s Gospel reminds us that Christ is the true light who entered the darkness of the world. John tells us that although the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him. This is the tragedy of sin that we fail to see God in our midst. Yet, the good news is that to all who received Him, He gave the power to become children of God.

St. Thomas Becket, whom we remember today, accepted this gift and defended the truth of the Church with his life. He stood firm against worldly power because he recognized that Christ’s light is greater than kings and rulers. His martyrdom is a reminder that the cost of discipleship may be high but it leads to eternal glory.

In our lives, we must also ask: Do I recognize the light of Christ in my daily struggles? Or do I allow the darkness of pride and fear to blind me? This feast challenges us to receive Christ daily, to live as children of God, and to be courageous in defending the truth. Christ’s light does not fade—it shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it. Let us walk in this light with faith and courage.
